Assignments:
- Success in this course is determined by the quality of work you produce. Assignments will require thought and effort, often to greater degrees than what your may have been used to. It is imperative that you complete your best work, address all components of an assignment thoroughly, and turn in work on time to receive full credit.
- Sloppy, incomplete work may be returned to you to “try again” before I will accept the assignment.
- All typed course work must meet MLA guidelines for formatting, or points may be deducted.
- Students are always welcome to utilize the in-class computers before or after school, but you may not print an assignment that is due for class at the start of or during class.
- It is crucial that you read all assignment guidelines that are given to you to ensure that your work meets expectations. If you have questions about an assignment at any time, please ask.
- If you find that you are struggling at any time over the course of the year, please reach out to me. We can likely develop a plan together that will help you be successful in class.
Cheating & Plagiarism:
Please refer to the PHS Student Honor Code for detailed information. The short version is that you will earn a zero on any assignment where you cheat or plagiarize and it will be documented with a referral.

All assignments will be graded using a 100 point scale. Your work will be graded in one of four ways:
- Numeric grade based on the 100 point scale
- Letter grade (A+, A, A-, etc.), generally with rubric conversion
- Check system for completed work: ✓+ (exceeds expectations), ✓ (meets expectations), ✓- (below expectations), X (poor quality)
- Class preparation composite: These are assignments that are quickly checked for completion to ensure that a student is prepared for class. These assignments might also be in-class practice. The composite score will consist of no more than 10 assignments and are either marked complete or not. There is no late credit for these assignments, but absent work can be made up. Mrs. Jenkins will keep track of these assignments on a clipboard, which students may see at any time.

- If you miss a day, all work due on that day must be turned in the following class meeting or it will be considered late.
- For long-term assignments that are submitted electronically, you must turn them in when they are due to earn full credit, even if you are absent.
- When assignments are due electronically, it is your responsibility to ensure and verify that work is appropriately submitted. Technology issues will not be an excuse for late submissions, as students have computer access in the classroom. Each calendar day that an assignment is late for submission on either turnitin.com or Google Classroom, the student will lose 20 points per day for up to 2 calendar days. Once 2 calendar days have elapsed, the essay/assignment will earn a zero.
- INFORMAL ASSIGNMENTS earn an automatic 50 and may submitted for 2 calendar days. After this time, assignments earn a zero.
- NO late credit can be earned for CLASS PREP check assignments, as it does not benefit you academically to complete these late.
- When submitting late work, please place it in the LATE BASKET with your name and date on it and the late work form ATTACHED to the assignment. If the assignment is an electronic submission, fill out an electronic late work form and place it in the bin so that Mrs. Jenkins knows to check for it.
- PARACHUTE PASS: You may use a Parachute Pass when you have ABSOLUTELY nothing left — no time, no energy, no motivation, whatever the case may be. To use your Parachute Pass, you must fill it out and I will then give you one additional calendar day to complete that assignment without penalty. Since we operate on an A/B day schedule, you must turn in the assignment the very next day of school rather than the next class day in order to earn full credit (if not, late credit applies). Please note that you only receive one Parachute Pass for the each semester. If you don't use your Parachute Pass, you will turn it in each at the end of each semester for EXTRA CREDIT in the formal category.
Absent Work Policy:
- The CMS “five day” rule allows you five calendar (not class) days to arrange to make up work that was assigned on the day you were out in order to earn full credit. Failure to arrange for makeup work in this timeframe can result in a zero and/or late work penalties.
- If you were in class the day an assignment was given, but absent on the due date, the assignment is due on the day you return to class in order to earn full credit (with the exception of long-term, electronically submitted assignments, which must be submitted even if you are absent from school that day).
- If you miss a day, you MUST check Google Classroom and your class calendar for a summary of what you missed. This is your responsibility. In the middle of class is not the appropriate time to “catch up.”
- In the case of an extended absence for whatever reason or an extenuating circumstance, please arrange to talk to me outside of class. We will need to work out a plan for completing coursework.
- A school-related absence does not justify late work. If you are going to miss class because of an approved school-sponsored event, you should make arrangements with me prior to the absence to make up work that will be missed and turn in assignments that will be due on that day. I encourage you to take advantage of educational opportunities that may take you away from campus, but you must be organized in the management of your time and responsibilities when doing so.
Online Submission:
To build your technology skills, formal essays and major assignments will be submitted on Google Classroom and/or turnitin.com. These websites are used throughout Providence High School and many colleges/universities as a means of communicating with students and checking for plagiarism. You must set up an account and submit every formal essay or major assignment to the appropriate website(s) in order to earn full credit. After you have submitted your work to turnitin.com, you will get a confirmation instantly as well as a confirmation email stating that the paper has been submitted correctly. After you have submitted your work to Google Classroom by clicking the “Turn In” button, it will appear marked as “Done”. It is your responsibility to verify that work is appropriately submitted. Information for setting up accounts is available on our class website. In the event that you lose your login information, use the reset username and password functions on each website, as Mrs. Jenkins does not have access to your login information. You are encouraged to use your SCHOOL email for any school "sign-ups".
